Here is what I have lined up so far for my Great Director's marathon focusing on the films of Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa and Scorsese. Let me know if there are any ones I am missing that I should touch on and your thoughts on any of these films.
Berman: The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, The Magic Flute, Fanny and Alexander
Fellini: La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, Juliet of the Spirits, Roma
Kurosawa: The Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Ikiru
Scorsese: Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ
I will be interested to see what you say about Bergman. Wild Strawberries is one of my all-time favorites. I Vitelloni is a really good early Fellini film. I just saw Scorsese's New York New York, a musical with Robert DeNiro (and Liza Minnelli) if you can believe it. I liked it a lot, and it might be a nice change of pace from the tough guy films he's better known for.
Scorsese did the commentary intro on the new release of La Strada and it was really quite fascinating. I think I should add I Vitelloni to my list - gotta watch Bicycle Thief first though to get a decent understanding of the Verismo style though. I'll let you know when I watch Strawberries - I started it before, but was distracted and did not get very far into it.
I kinda can't believe the musical...to be seen to be believed?
Also - I will drop a line about your FAT AFI list next week - wanted to do that when I started my best films list. I read it - damn funny. Nice work - you should add a link to your page on your avatar thinger - like Kevin's Duffman thing.
DeNiro sort of sings a little bit, but he mainly plays saxophone. Usually I am annoyed watching "musicians" in movies because they are so obviously not playing, but I was impressed at how authentic he looked while playing. I later read that he actually learned how to play for the movie.
That picture of Chris Farley on the AFI list is seriously the worst picture of him ever taken, and I'm taking into account the fact that he's making a "funny face." Really, AFI. Why the hatin'? Let everyone's favorite Chippendale rest in peace.
Do directors get "Minus" points for dropping the ball? If so we must remember "Gangs of New York" was a bit of a turkey
