What do you think about the recent trend of Hollywood remaking foreign films? Like Chris, I enjoyed the Departed, but I enjoyed the original Hong Kong version Infernal Affairs even more. Other examples have included the spate of Japanese horror films as well as my recent review of the German update No Reservations. Do you think that Hollywood has found a new fresh fountain of film ideas or are they simply taking wonderful original films and watering them down?

I hate that Hollywood caters so readily to the subtitle-resistant moviegoer. Is a film more scary because there are white famous people getting haunted by ghosts rather than Asians that are unknown to us? How many times funnier is a farce when it's Freddie Prinze Jr. instead of Gerard Depardieu slipping on dog *****? People who don't want to have to "think" or "read" at the movies don't deserve to see interesting movies. They can watch Garfield : A Tale of Two Kitties. No "thinking" or "reading" required.

I was getting a bit alarmed a couple of years ago when Hollywood started doing remakes of classic Ealing comedies. They did a version of The Ladykillers with Tom Hanks in the Alec Guinness role. Actually, it was rather good. They transferred the action from Clapham in South London to some scumbag hamlet in rural Georgia. It worked perfectly. Sadly not a classic.

Mmmmmmmmmactually.... it was in Louisiana i believe, because the heist involved ripping off a casino riverboat/cruise ship. Let's not forget the awesome role of XXXXXX Wayans (his actual name doesn't matter, they're all the worst thing to happen to movies).
I stand corrected. Louisiana it was. I get so confused with all these Southern States. Can't you get rid of a couple?

Did you like the orig? I was actually shocked at how bad Alec Guiness was in it....even though it was the Coen Bros...I could not bring myself to watch the new one. And as for the South...I try not to cross the Mason Dixon line...
I wasn't all that fond of the original. I only ever watch it because the mad old biddy in it keeps parrots (tenuous link). Apparently it was voted the 39th greatest film of all time. What on earth does that mean?
